2016 Update

Hello Everyone!  It's 2016 and it only took me just over a month to write my first post!  Not bad considering my track record lately.

Let's start with a follow-up....

...in the last post I mentioned wanting to get involved with charity work.  Turns out getting into volunteer work here in The Netherlands isn't easy.  It's almost like taking on a side job, contracts, large commitments, insurance... c'mon!  What ever happened to having a couple hours of spare time a month and being able to just go and help people or animals?  Sure I know it's for every one's safety, but they are also deterring usable people.  My husband seemed to find a good solution, and managed to execute his idea.  So the one person not talking about it was the one that actually did something!  (He also got lucky they came to the door looking for help.)  My husband and daughter signed up to walk around the neighborhood and collect money for the "hersenstitching".  (A charity that helps with brain related diseases.)  Unfortunately my daughter & I were sick that week and he had a couple large deadlines, so they weren't able to hit up as many houses as planned but they still played their part.

...another similar post was about helping out.  I can at least say I have been doing a small portion to help.  I have been going through boxes and boxes of baby clothes and making different piles -  sell - donate to a 2nd hand shop - and donate to a charity.  The charity donations have been easy, literally put the stuff in a bag and deposit the bag in the collection bin in our neighborhood.  It might be easy but it's good to know we are helping a baby/toddler somewhere in the world.  Dealing with the rest of the stuff is going to be a bigger project, and an upcoming post.

...normal life abroad... yeah, last time I checked we were still normal, oh wait, tax season is rolling around again.  No, in that we're not normal... because being Americans abroad we get to pay taxes twice just because the US says so!  Not fair, and definitely separates us from so many other cultures.  (Complaining about an unfair tax system and FACTA, will have to wait for the appropriate future post.)

...where have we been... we moved from the city to a small village back in the summer.  In many ways it really suites us and has changed our lives for the better.  In other ways, the distance from everything has proven to be a challenge on many occasions, but I guess with the good comes the bad.  We love the house and surrounding landscape, but wow, I had no idea keeping up with a house and yard was this much work.  Remember, we moved from a small two bedroom apartment to a house more than twice the size.  At times keeping up with it all is quite overwhelming, but I wouldn't trade it for the apartment again!  I guess less complaining and more working will do the trick.

...how are the recipe clippings and cooking going, well, worse than ever!  I've stopped collecting recipes because I have come to realize I just can't cook well.  My cooking skills have actually regressed since moving, maybe it's lack of time or not understanding the oven here, either way wow!  Every meal gets served with an apology and it's growing quite tiresome.  A wife should be able to cook, especially a stay-at-home mom.  I never thought my cooking skills would contribute so much to how I feel about myself, but it's just getting embarrassing.

Well, after re-reading this I am wondering why the follow-up on everything has been more negative than positive???  Sometimes we just try and do everything, and we all know that's impossible.  Probably time to stop spreading myself so thin!  Have a great day!

Bye! Dag! Adios! Namaste! Salut!

Anyone still there?

HELLO!!!  I know it's been a while, ok 5 months, but here I am again.  Trust me I think of the blog often but it takes a certain dedication I just don't have right now.  Plus everything that pops in my head is either too personal or too normal to post.

The main reason I took up blogging was to share my normal life abroad with others throughout the world.  And to help nearby expats find their way.  But now that I no longer live in a major city, I feel like I have nothing new to offer.  I am out of touch with big events in Eindhoven, and things that happen near the village I live in are too small to involve the international community.  But one thing I do have is 13 yrs of built up knowledge, so I can always fall back on that!

I think one of the neatest things that has happened to me through blogging was being contacted by a woman in Argentina who was going to move to The Netherlands.  She had questions about elementary school and life here in general.  We ended up emailing back & forth until she moved  And the other day as we sat having coffee together, watching the kids play, I was just amazed that our new found friendship started from this small blog.

Since I am not class mom this year at school I feel like I have had less opportunities to help out the new moms in the area.  But luckily my daughter is quite social and I met a few newbies recently.  Actually have a couple new play dates (inc coffee for the moms) lined up.

I find it so fascinating to meet people from all over the world.  To hear about what is normal to them, and share our cultures with each other.  It's also amazing just how many people take that step and move abroad, far from what they understand or are comfortable with.

Must admit though, my move here was quite cushioned considering my American husband was raised here and spoke Dutch.  And all of my in-laws are here.  I take my hat off to those expats who move without that cushion... who knows, maybe one day that will be us too.

I'll close for now, and fingers crossed that I post again this month!

Bye! Dag! Adios! Namaste! Salut!

Where Have I Been?

I took a nearly 4 month hiatus from blogging, and boy does it feel good to be back.  When your schedule picks up you are forced to sacrifice something, and well, blogging was one of those things.  Now that school is out for the summer I am hoping to squeeze in a few posts over the next couple weeks.

The biggest reason blogging had to take a back seat is... drum roll please... we finally sold our apartment & bought a house!!!  It was a 4 year process, but definitely worth waiting for.

Not only did we buy a house, we moved cities.  We left the center of a busy city and moved to a little village with roughly 1,100 residents.  It's a big change, but a good one.  Now if I can just learn to sleep through the quiet nights!  Where are the sirens, motorcycles, and barhopping crowd when you need a good night sleep, ha-ha?

A lot of the roads leading from the main cities to our village are barely big enough for two cars.  But they are lined with trees & farms, which is a much better view than the concrete & endless buildings we had grown accustom to in the city.

Sure the house is going to require a lot more upkeep but so far we're happy to do it.  We were out doing yard work this morning with pleasure.  We often stop, look around, and smile at the improvement from where we used to live.  Patience does pay off.

There will be plenty more posts to come about this new phase of our lives, so be sure to check back periodically.

Bye! Dag! Adios! Namaste! Salut!

Finding Balance

Where have I been you ask?  (Or maybe not, ha-ha!)  Well, I allowed myself to get so ridiculously focused on my daily schedule that I turned into a human robot.  It happens!

Finding balance in life is so important and yet so hard.  We can't do it all at one time.

You know there are the things you have to do to survive... there are things you have to do to be a good wife & parent... there are things you have to do to run a house... plus juggling school & sports... there are meals to be made & bags to be packed... bills to be paid & plans to be made... there are hobbies & down time... I could go on and on.

But how do you juggle everything and still have an ounce of spontaneity & freedom left?

That's where balance comes into play.

I think it will be a life long commitment, just like health.  There are no quick or easy answers.  It's just doing what's right for you & yours.

Thanks to a holiday refresher, and of course my husband pointing out the side road of life I had decided to veer down, I'm trying to get back on track.  Trying to find a way to balance the needs, wants, & of course fun in life.  I hope to get back to blogging, writing, & photography.  But first things first, I hope to get my personality back!  For the sake of my husband & daughter, and family & friends!

So here's another step down the road of life, a step towards balance, my first blog post of 2015!  (Nothing like the pressure of the first post of the year, ha-ha!)

Hope all is well in your corner of the world and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Bye! Dag! Adios! Namaste!

Blogging Anniversary #3

Wow, where does the time go?  Did you know this is my 3rd year of blogging?  I almost forgot!  Turns out, back in October my blog turned 3!

Just like life, blogging has an interesting way of taking different paths over time.  Especially a random blog like mine.  At times I am more focused on activities around the city where I live, other times health & fitness, and even a book review here or there.  Lately I have very little time to consistently post, unlike last year.  And I seem to often be blogging about being a parent, something I tried to veer away from in the past.

But with this new blogging year, changes are coming.  There's a lot going on in our personal lives.  Things I would like to post but have to wait for the right timing.  So until I can share these ideas & plans, you're just going to have to take the blog for what it is and has been.  And to help you do that, here are a few of my favorite posts from the past year:

Liebster Award

After 3 years of blogging I have finally been nominated for The Liebster Award, thanks Sara over at Nine and Ninety Nine!

Now that I have been nominated, what does it even mean, ha-ha?  I have seen it on many other blogs but I never read the details.  It means somebody out there recognizes I have a semi-decent blog and some how still have less than 200 followers.  (This is most likely because my blog is random in every way... no set topics, no set schedule, I can't even promise to post weekly - but I do write these posts hoping to help others, I get points for that, right?)

So, here are the rules :
1)  Link the person's blog to your blog entry that nominated you
2)  Answer the 11 questions below
3)  Find 11 blogs with less than 200 followers and nominate them
4)  Come up with 11 questions for these bloggers

These are the questions Sara came up with :

1)  What things can you not live without?
Besides the obvious, my family, food & shelter, I'd say - an internet connection :)
2)  If you could go anywhere, where would you go?

If it doesn't have to be real then, Pandora.
3)  What is your favorite book and season?

Book - a baby name book, I love names & meanings, weird right?  Season - spring, it's when everything comes to life.
4)  What are three goals you want to achieve in your life time?

Shed the baby weight from 5 yrs ago & keep it off, ha-ha!  Visit at least 3 countries in Asia.  And touch as many lives as I can even if it's just a smile.
5)  What is your favorite food?

Most anything Indian (hope that's PC, have been overseas for a while)!
6)  What do you miss most about home?

Besides my family & close friends of course, the cheap shopping.
7)  What surprises you most about living abroad?

That being a "foreigner" has so many classifications & levels.
8)  How do you balance conflicting areas in your life?

Ha, is that possible, I just keep juggling I guess.
9)  What's in your bag/ backpack/ purse?

Everything, my purse is the size of a "carry-on".
10)  What are you most proud of?

My daughter & my husband, they amaze me.
11)  What things do you love and hate about being an expat?

Love - experiencing other cultures.  Hate - getting stared at so often.

Here are the blogs I am nominating, some I follow and some I found, it's always nice to find new blogs no matter the reason.

1)  Adventures in Juggling
2)  American Mom in Bordeaux
3)  Bees, Birds, Berries, & Blooms
4)  Beyond My Picket Fence
5)  Everything Susan
6)  Expat Life with a Double Buggy
7)  Hip Healthy Chick
8)  Nearly Irish
9)  Running with Swans
10)  Super Chic Mom
11)  The Blog of the Fictionaut

And since I am completely pressed for time these days (in a good way ,thanks to volunteering at school).  I'm going to borrow questions that turned up after a Google search.  (Thanks, Psychology Today!)

1)  Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?
2)  Would you like to be famous? In what way?
3)  Before making a phone call, do you ever rehearse what you're going to say? Why?
4)  When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?
5)  If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?
6)  If you could wake up tomorrow having gained one quality or ability, what would it be?
7)  Is there something that you've dreamt of doing for a long time? Why haven't you done it?
8)  What does friendship mean to you?
9)  When did you last cry in front of another person? By yourself?
10)  Would you be willing to have horrible nightmares for a year if you would be rewarded with extraordinary wealth?
11)  Complete this sentence "I wish I had someone with whom I could share..."

Good luck to those I nominated, hope you decide to pass on the award and help bloggers keep getting to know each other and helping their small portion of the blogging world grow.  Thanks again Sara!

Summer Fun

Don't worry, I haven't given up on my blog!

I've been busy enjoying all the summer has to offer us, and luckily for you this means fun posts in the future.  Hopefully this week I'll be able to get a post or two on my blog!

Since we took a large vacation back in March, our summer so far has been a combination of free or cheap activities near the house... and one long weekend (three different cities) which saw us travel around 580km/360m by car!

How have you decided to spend your summer?

My Writing Process

Recently I was contacted by Anne, from over at Nearly Irish, wondering if I would be interested in participating in the #mywritingprocess blog tour.

First off, who's Anne?  She is an expat like myself, but instead of being an American living in The Netherlands, she's French and living in Ireland.  And she does a brilliant job of blogging in English even though it's not her native language (big pat on the back, I wouldn't dare blog in Dutch, ha-ha)!  Also like myself, her blog isn't just about being an expat, it's about being integrated into a foreign country due to the extent of time abroad.  Be sure to pop over and give her blog a read.

Second, what is the #mywritingprocess blog tour?  It's a way for bloggers to explain just how they come up with the great material they pump out on a weekly basis.  And it can even go beyond blogging, because I'm sure a lot of bloggers are just writers in general, so there are possible manuscripts, poems, articles, etc. going on in the background.  And of course it's a way to spread the word about your blog as well as learning about other interesting blogs.

So here goes, 4 simple questions :

1) What am I working on?
I write nearly every day, sometimes it's blog posts and sometimes it's a story.  When it comes to blogging I write about events/topics as they happen or refer to the drafts I generally I keep on the back burner for the weeks when I have little content.  When it comes to my stories (manuscripts - yet most of them are short and not finished) I have weeks when I am working on the same one and then times when I skip around between drafts, depends mostly on my creative flow.

2)  How does my work differ from others of its genre?
The best part of my blog is that you (and I) never know what I'll blog about next.  I feel this is what makes my blog different.  One day I could be posting about clothing and the next crime.  And I also have a love for photography, so I like to incorporate my own photos into the blog.  As far as my stories, well, I'm not sure what makes me different because I've never dared try to publish any of my work.  All I know is that the stories keep coming to my head and it's been like this my entire life.  Somewhere inside I have a natural gift of creating characters and story lines, I now just need to find a way to hone in on that and turn it into something I can share with others.  (But to be honest, I'm also happy just writing for myself.)

3)  Why do I write what I do?
Blogging helps me get out all of the the nagging thoughts that I want to share with people.  Sometimes I want people to understand you can live a normal life abroad, that it's possible to be integrated and a foreigner at the same time.  I also blog because I love spreading the word (good or bad), so if there is a product, company, movie, store, etc I (dis)like, I want to let everyone know.  I'm always looking for tips, so why not share my knowledge.  My stories (books) are different, I tend to write action romance.  I'm a sucker for a good romance, but not the boring ones.  (Think of Die Hard mixing with The Notebook, ha-ha, I wish!)  And in order to keep my creative side interested I hop all over the place time period wise, from medieval times to the future.

4)  How does my writing process work?
Unfortunately the process is my downfall.  My blog explains it all, random, random, random.  I wish I could tell you I sit down and write out a good outline before I get started.  If I could just get myself to do this I might actually be a published author by now.  Whether it's my blog or my stories, I write what comes to mind at that moment.  Sure I make notes here and there, but that's mostly because I don't have the time to write just then or maybe I have a goal and don't want to forget it.  (When you write like I do, you get side tracked easily... in general I get side tracked easily, it's a personality thing.)  The problem with being creative is you never know when it will hit you; being a stay-at-home mom I don't have the time to write whenever, so generally I stick to mornings when my kid is at school for my blog, and evenings for my stories (keeping in mind my husband also deserves some of my time.  Oh yeah, and the dog & house, ha-ha!)  The time I allot also varies, blog posts can take 15-30 minutes, and my stories, well, before my daughter came along I was writing roughly 20-40 hrs a week, and now in 30 min spurts here and there!

As mentioned, it's a tour, so of course the torch has to be passed on.  I follow lots of different blogs, so I figured I would pick two completely different bloggers to keep this tour alive on July 21st.

-  When looking for a fun blog with lots of blog parties, one blogger stuck out, Paula from Sincerely Paula.  She maintains a lifestyle blog, but to be honest I love visiting for the blog hops.  It's a guaranteed place to meet other bloggers as well as exposing my own material.  She's also known for her Pinterest addiction, ha-ha (we've all been there, right?)

- When looking for posts that will get my brain churning, another blogger stood out, Karen from My Own Mind.  She often talks about homeschooling and/or being Atheist, and now her blog has shifted a little since her return to The States from Australia.  I enjoy the way she can get people riled up and talking, it never hurts to challenge someones point of view and open a discussion.

Please do yourself a favor and check all of the mentioned blogs, and if you're interested in the #mywritingprocess blog tour but haven't been asked to participate, send me an email!

Draft Time

I get the pleasure of blogging from the car garage this morning!  Can't really complain... free coffee, free snack, & free WiFi.  Between my phone and the Surface, I'm set with entertainment for the next hour or so.  Seems like a perfect time to start writing some draft posts, always good to have something waiting on the back burner for the days I want to post content to my blog but just don't have the time to write!

Where To Now?

It's more than 2 weeks into 2014 and I've barely posted a thing.  Where to now?
Like a good little blogger, last year I did my best to maintain a schedule, 2 posts a week + a Wordless Wednesday.  And inevitably like most creative people the schedule seemed to suck the fun out of the idea behind my blog.

My blog is supposed to be random... I'm sure you read the description, right, ha-ha!

So, back to where it all started, I'll post when I have something worth saying.  I'll participate in WW when I have a worthy picture, not just something I found in my stock because it's Wednesday again

And you know, another reason I put off the 1st big post was because last years was so darn good, I wanted to raise the bar and instead my blogger brain shut off.

This year already seems quite busy, and I can only have so much on my plate.  I want to give 100% in everything I do, and that's not always possible.  Often if I can't give 100%, I give 0%... that's not really a solution either.

Here's to doing what I can, trying to live in the moment, and taking each day for what it's worth... instead of just rushing on to the next activity and next day.

Oh yeah, and I'll eventually update my "Goals for 2014" (sidebar)... and yes, again 1/2 of them carried over from last year!

Don't worry readers, I haven't quit my blog!  Just getting back in the swing of things after a wonderful winter vacation!  I'm hoping to get back to blogging next week!
And yes, my husband did draw on my face while I was asleep on the couch!

GLOW 2013

We managed to see GLOW before it wrapped up on the 16th... some how schedules aligned and the weather fairly cooperated!  We were able to make it an extra special night by teaming up with friends & their kids and getting dinner reservations at the local soccer stadium.  What does soccer and GLOW have to do with each other?  Well, this year one of the light shows was presented at the PSV stadium, and because we ate there we were allowed to use special seats, avoiding the crowds, getting a private view, and we could watch the show repeatedly (the kids did)!  And we also fulfilled our daughters wish of visiting the inside of the stadium (the points are rolling in).
Besides the large soccer themed light show at the stadium, we were able to hit up 5 other displays before the kids collapsed.  The way the event route was set up this year not so many displays were located within child walking distance of our apartment.  So in order to see the group favorite at the end of the night we all hoped in my husbands SUV and drove to where the dragon/sea monster was situated.  There were quite a few attractions we would have liked to have seen but between the weather, distance, and hour, we had to end the night.  Needless to say the dinner and VIP show at the stadium pleased everyone enough it didn't matter.  As always I have pics for you, please excuse the quality, this year I only had my phone on me.  And don't forget to check out last year's post also (GLOW 2012).

New Pages

The time has come to expand my blog!  I've added two new pages, Book Reviews & Blog Hops, so be sure to check them out!

I felt with my connections and my love for writing & books, it would be a good idea to start up a place to host & promote books that catch my interest.  I love a good romance, but who knows what will turn up!

I'm often looking for a central location for blog hops so that I can quickly & easily promote my blog and link up to blogs I might not have found on my own.  I finally decided just to create my own simple directory.

If any of you want to see your books or blogs end up on one of my new pages please pop me an email and I will be sure to reply.  (contact information located on sidebar)

Wow, it's been 2 years since I let you all into the quirky world of Danica's Thoughts!!  Like any blog there have been ups and downs... times when I managed to pop out 20 posts in a month (October 2012) and even times when I considered ending the blog.  You have seen my huge collection of Wordless Wednesdays (75 and counting) and you have read my endless comparisons of The States versus The Netherlands.  Who knows what comes next, but as of now, I am still happy sharing my journey through life with you and showing you how normal & abnormal living abroad can be.  That's just it, my blog is random, I don't focus on being an expat, a woman, or a mom, I talk about many aspects of a life.  I appreciate you peaking into my world, and letting me into yours.  No matter the walk of life, we all have something to share!

Eye Opening

I've always enjoyed photography (even wrote a post about it)... I'm far from professional but that doesn't make me enjoy it any less. But in the past year or so my interest has taken on a new life, and in a way, I can thank this blog for that. We all know the term stop and smell the flowers, well, I feel I have been doing that more often. Used to I would just go from point A to be B lost in my own thoughts or on a mission but nowadays I actually look around, take in the sights, look for interesting pictures and posts. I feel media like this blog and Instagram have opened my eyes. There are many fascinating things around us everyday and yet we over look them.

I was sure to include photos of things I often see in my life recently. Are you overly focused on your daily tasks or do you take the time to look around & appreciate your surroundings?

Guest Blogger???

Since I have an upcoming trip to The States planned, I'm looking for a few guest bloggers to help keep things interesting around here while I'm gone.  My blog is pretty random so I'm not looking for one theme in particular.  It's always fun to connect and also to promote other blogs... you know I love promoting blogs, stores, music, etc.  Maybe you just want to write about yourself and your blog, maybe you want to write about something on your mind, maybe you just want to ramble on, maybe you want to talk about expat life or parenthood, maybe you want to write about struggles or triumphs... I'll take it all into consideration.
If you're interested please email me at :
danicasthoughts (at) upcmail (dot) nl
Please submit your name, contact info (including your blog address), and your idea for a post.  If you happen to already have a draft or finished post, you can also submit this via mail.  I also post pictures with every blog post I write, so also consider what picture (drawing, photo, etc. or even just a blog logo) you'd like to use.  In return I will let you know if it is something I am interested in and we go from there.  I'll be accepting applicants all this week and possibly into the following weekend.
